Shanghai Sanyou Medical Co., Ltd. is a high-tech enterprise specializing in the R&D, manufacturing, and marketing of orthopedic implant devices. Its core R&D focuses on spine and trauma product lines, making Sanyou a domestic pioneer in clinically driven original innovation. In recent years, Sanyou has made strategic moves into sports medicine. My work developing sports medicine sutures, a fundamental component of this field, marked a pivotal turning point in my professional career.
In April 2021, amid the lingering COVID-19 pandemic, I resolved to step away from my long-held position focusing on low-value medical consumables and join Sanyou. It was not merely a career shift, but an opportunity to challenge and rebuild my professional capabilities. I fully understood that I would embark on a project starting from scratch—the in-house development of proprietary sports medicine sutures.
Entering Uncharted Waters: Finding My Way in the Unknown
The suture project started from scratch: no equipment on-site, operation manuals available mostly in English, and suppliers unable to provide on-site support amid global lockdowns. With uncalibrated imported machines all around and stacks of technical documents piling up, I felt overwhelmed by the pressure.
But I knew I had to rise to the challenge. Leveraging my expertise and English proficiency, I pored over the manuals, coordinated remotely with overseas engineers, and ultimately got all core equipment installed and fully commissioned. Every successful test run restored my confidence little by little. I learned that true innovation begins where no one has ventured before.
Standing Fast Through Lockdown: My Workstation, My Battleground, With a Cot Right Behind Me
In March 2022, Shanghai came to a standstill. Nevertheless, Sanyou pressed on without pause. To keep advancing key projects, it arranged essential staff to stay on-site full-time. I volunteered to step up, the sole on-site member of the R&D team.
Back then, a simple cot sat right behind my workstation—my work and life merged. I jumped straight into experiments each morning and stayed deep in data analysis late at night. Mr. Xu Nong, CEO of Sanyou, also stationed himself on-site alongside the whole team. His unwavering resolve and strong sense of responsibility encouraged us tremendously.
It was during this extraordinary period that I fully immersed myself in systematically exploring the clinical principles of suture application. From surgeons’ surgical techniques to patients’ postoperative recovery, every detail shaped our design decisions. The grueling workload instead fostered remarkable efficiency, enabling us to hit key project milestones one after another.
From Cocoon to Butterfly: The Leap from Zero to One
Storms always fade, and perseverance brings light in the end. Through relentless efforts, we not only achieved breakthroughs in developing sports medicine sutures from scratch, but also built stable, reliable mass production capabilities. This milestone fills Sanyou's gap in flexible materials and lays foundation for the future R&D of innovative product portfolios and combined surgical procedures.
Today, Sanyou's sutures are an indispensable pillar of the sports medicine portfolio, driving broader use of flexible materials in orthopedic implants. It is not merely a technical success, but the finest embodiment of Sanyou's commitment to being clinically driven.
Reflecting on this journey, I witnessed Sanyou's resilience in the face of adversity and underwent a profound personal transformation in my own career.
